Panmure Golf Club: A Classic Scottish Golf Experience

Panmure Golf Club, adorned in Scottish history, tradition and charm. Established in 1845, Panmure is recognised as the 21st oldest golf club in world. The famous Old Tom Morris and James Braid designed links requires both strategy and skill to navigate and negotiate the sandhills forged by nature. The course combines the best elements of links and heathland, with tight fairways, challenging carries and undulating greens. The texture of heather, pines, dunes and fescue intertwine to produce a landscape which screams firm fast and handsome golf. An authentic experience, rich in tradition and affluent in hospitality.

Panmure Golf Club

In 1953 Ben Hogan won his one and only Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links. The man known as the ‘Wee Ice Mon’ by the Scots cemented his legendary reputation thanks to the help of Panmure Golf Club. The great Hogan spent two weeks at Panmure, accompanied only by his caddy, Cecil Timms to acclimatise to the terrain of links golf and to acquaint himself with the smaller 1.62 inch British ball. Hogan would never play in the Open again, but his legacy at Panmure remains! The 6th hole, a 414 yard par 4, stroke index 1, is named after the great man. Hogan suggested the addition of the cleverly-placed hidden pot bunker to the front right of the green. Over seventy years on, the members still refer to it as "Hogan's Bunker". You have the opportunity to attain a specially commissioned Glencairn glass if you can achieve a birdie on the 6th hole, engraved with the Club logo and stating, you birdied Hogan’s favourite hole! To qualify for the Hogan challenge, you simply have to play from either the blue, white or black tees and score a gross 3. Good luck! To collect your glass, please speak to a member of staff in the clubhouse or professional shop.

The History Of Panmure Golf Club

We are very proud of the Club’s history and rich heritage, where 17 gentleman came together to form Panmure Golf Club in May, 1845. The Club’s name and logo come from the close connection with the Maule Ramsay family and to this day, the the Rt. Hon. Earl of Dalhousie is the Club’s Honorary President. In addition, our links to royalty also includes King George VI, who accepted honorary membership of the Club in 1930. Games of golf have been won and lost over the links at Panmure for a very long time. In 1527, it was reported in the Registrum de Panmure that Sir Robert Maule “exerciset the gowf, and oftymes past to Barry lynkes, quan the wadsie was for drink’’ Panmure is the world’s 21st oldest golf club and moved to our current site in Barry in 1899. The original layout was designed by Old Tom Morris and constructed by R. Duff of Edinburgh, who also built the New course at St Andrews and Muirfield. Many of the original holes remain. We are one of the 24 clubs that originally helped purchase the Amateur Championship trophy, first played for in 1885. A copy of the R&A minute is on display in the Clubhouse, which states all of the Clubs involved. Five-time Open champion James Braid gave suggestions for modifications in the 1920s and those were among the most significant changes over the past century. Some of the charming characteristics include holes designed by these greats. Braid’s par-3, 180-yard 9th hole, with its undulating green protected by large bunkers and dunes and Old Tom’s par-4, 396-yard 12th hole which requires an accurate approach shot to carry the Buddon Burn guarding the front of the green. Today the course measures 6,551 yards, plays to a par 70, and combines the best elements of links and heathland, with tight fairways, challenging carries and undulating greens. Panmure has hosted many prestigious championships over the years ranging from national amateur tournaments to final qualifying for The Open Championship. Recently, the club has hosted regional qualifying for The Open, the R&A Girls Amateur Championship, final qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open and the stroke play qualifying for the R&A Boys Amateur Championship. We will be delighted to provide you with a historical tour of the clubhouse facilities, highlighting the Club trophies, which can viewed in our Hogan lounge. In addition, the Captains’ silver clubs are proudly displayed, which includes the long nosed club dating from 1845. During our annual dinner, the Senior Past Captain presents the new Captain with a silver ball, which is attached to the silver club.
