Experience Premier Golf at Belas Club de Campo Retreat
Belas Club de Campo, owned by Planbelas S.A., is a 462 hectare (1,142 acre) residential complex close to the villages of Belas and Quelez, an area where, in days gone by, members of the nobility with ties to the Portuguese Royal Family established a summer retreat not far from the Royal Palace in Queluz. Located about a ten-minute drive away from Portugal's cosmopolitan capital, Lisbon and a similar distance from Sintra - an historical town awarded world heritage status - Belas Clube de Campo is closely linked to a modern motorway network allowing easy access to Lisbon International Airport, to the north of the country as well as to the south over the Tagus River bridges.
William "Rocky" Roquemore realised one of his prime designs at this championship standard par 72 golf course which measures 6,109 metres. The impeccably maintained greens tees and fairways were seeded with Penneagle and Pennlinks grass, and are masterfully set into valleys, protected from the full force of the winds.
The course meanders in amongst the hillsides, affording splendid views of the Sintra hills and is divided into well defined parts: one with low density residential surroundings and the other through an untouched natural environment.
The signature holes, highlighted for both their beauty and difficulty, are the second, called "Augusta" in honour of the 13th at that famous course in Georgia, and the finishing hole, aptly named "The Grand Hole".

Key aspects of the golf experience:
Design Philosophy: Roquemore designed the course to be a "meeting point between golfers and nature." It's meticulously integrated into the natural landscape, with environmental considerations being a key part of its development. Belas was one of the first golf courses in Europe to achieve ISO and GEO certifications for environmental sustainability.
Layout and Challenge: The course is known for its extraordinary layout with several fairways and greens set in deep valleys. It demands both skill and tactical play. Golfers often describe it as challenging, requiring precision and strategy.
The course is divided into two distinct sections
The first nine holes traverse a naturally preserved landscape with diverse flora and fauna.
The second nine holes wind through the excellent residential villas that are part of the country club development.
There are undulating and sheltered fairways and greens, and water hazards come into play on many holes, adding to the difficulty and visual appeal.
While not necessarily the longest course at around 6,109 meters (approximately 6,700 yards) from the professional tees, its strategic design, well-placed bunkers, elevated tees, and tricky greens provide a significant test for all handicaps.
Views: The course offers fantastic views of the Sintra Mountains and the surrounding valleys, contributing to a picturesque golfing experience.
Notable History: Belas Clube de Campo has hosted significant competitions, including the European Challenge Tour's Grand Final (1998) and the Senior Open de Portugal (2011).
Facilities & Residential Development:
Belas Clube de Campo is more than just a golf course; it's a comprehensive country club and residential community. Its facilities include:
Clubhouse: A modern and well-appointed clubhouse, often praised for its design and hospitality. It houses a pro shop, a restaurant (Casa no Campo), and a bar, with terraces offering views of the course.
Practice Facilities: Excellent training areas, including a driving range (with covered tees), putting greens, and a chipping area, suitable for golfers of all levels.
Golf Academy: Offers a range of programs and individual lessons with expert instructors.
Wellness & Sports: Beyond golf, the club provides other amenities such as a gym, tennis courts, and sometimes football pitches.
Gastronomy: Multiple dining options, including the clubhouse restaurant and a café (Café no Campo).
Residential Component: The course is integrated into a luxury residential development featuring villas, apartments, and townhouses. This means that while playing, you will see homes around certain holes, particularly on the back nine.
Other Services: Shuttle services, event facilities, and a school (Jardim Escola João de Deus de Belas) contribute to the community feel.
Overall Impression:
Belas Clube de Campo is frequently regarded as a challenging and enjoyable golf course in the Lisbon area, offering a strong blend of natural beauty and strategic design. While some older reviews mention variable course conditions, more recent feedback often points to improved maintenance, particularly on the greens. Its integrated residential component and comprehensive facilities make it attractive for both local members and golf tourists visiting the Lisbon region.
