Premier Golf Resorts in Algarve Portugal
Quinta do Lago Resort — Algarve, Portugal
Quinta do Lago is one of the Premier Golf Resorts in Algarve Portugal, set within the Ria Formosa Natural Park near the Atlantic coast. The resort offers a combination of high-quality golf courses, excellent practice facilities, and upscale accommodations, making it a favorite for golfers seeking a polished, full-service experience.
Courses
North Course: Designed by William F. Mitchell and updated by Donald Steel and Délcio Rodrigues, the North Course is known for its strategic layout, wide fairways, and mature pine, oak, and eucalyptus trees. It rewards accuracy off the tee and thoughtful approach play.
South Course: Crafted by William F. Mitchell, the South Course features a more parkland-style setting with water hazards and a variety of hole designs. It’s playable for a wide range of handicaps while still presenting strategic challenges for better players.
Laranjal Course: Designed by Clive Beck and restored to championship standard, Laranjal runs through rolling terrain and orange groves. It is typically regarded as the most scenic of the three and offers a mix of tight driving holes and risk-reward approach shots.
San Lorenzo (nearby, part of the Quinta do Lago estate): Although technically adjacent, San Lorenzo is frequently associated with the Quinta do Lago offering. Designed by Joseph Lee, it is a heathland-style layout routed through dunes and pine forest directly beside the Ria Formosa. It’s the most celebrated of the group and often hosts professional events.
Course Conditions and Playability Greens and fairways at Quinta do Lago are well maintained year-round, benefiting from the Algarve’s mild climate. Drainage and turf management are strong, so courses remain playable outside of peak summer months. Tee options allow golfers of varying skill levels to enjoy the layouts without feeling overwhelmed.
Practice and Facilities
Short-game area, driving range, and dedicated putting greens.
Clubhouses provide pro shops, equipment rental, locker rooms, and coaching services, including private lessons and swing analysis.
On-course marshals and GPS systems are commonly available to maintain pace of play and enhance the visitor experience.
Accommodation and Resort Amenities Quinta do Lago is a mixed-use resort with luxury hotels, private villas, and apartment rentals. Facilities notably include fine dining restaurants, relaxed bars, spa services, tennis and padel courts, cycling paths, and a lake for watersports. The resort’s location near Faro Airport (approximately 20–25 minutes) makes it convenient for international travelers.
Dining and Après-Golf A range of dining options is available from casual to upscale, with menus often highlighting fresh seafood, Portuguese specialties, and international cuisine. Many golf clubs and nearby hotels offer quality post-round dining with terraces and views over the course or water features.
Season and Weather The Algarve’s climate makes Quinta do Lago playable most of the year. Peak season runs from late spring through early autumn (April–October). Winters are mild but can be wetter; however, generally playable days remain common.
Tournaments and Events Quinta do Lago and neighboring San Lorenzo have hosted national and international amateur and professional events. The resort also caters to corporate golf days, group events, and bespoke golf packages.
Quinta do Lago offers a refined Algarve golf experience: championship-caliber courses, reliable course conditioning, and the resort infrastructure to support both dedicated golf trips and mixed leisure escapes.
The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is currently the most talked-about golf destination in Europe. Located about an hour south of Lisbon in the Alentejo region, it has quickly ascended to the top of international rankings since its official opening in October 2023.1
Designed by acclaimed Scottish architect David McLay-Kidd (the mind behind Bandon Dunes and the Castle Course at St.2 Andrews), it represents his first project in mainland Europe.3
The course is built on a massive 84-hectare site within the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve.4 It is a "true links" style course, which is rare for Southern Europe.5

The Dunas Course is defined by its "raw" and natural aesthetic. Unlike many manicured resort courses in the Algarve, Dunas feels like it was discovered rather than built.
Sandy Terrain: The course sits on a deep bed of sand, allowing for world-class drainage and a firm playing surface that rewards "ground game" shots.6
Strategic Design: McLay-Kidd designed the course to be "fun" rather than punishing.7 The fairways are exceptionally wide, but the challenge lies in the angles required to approach the greens effectively.8
Secluded Setting: It is surrounded by wild pine forests and dunes, with no residential buildings encroaching on the field of play, offering a peaceful, immersive nature experience.9
Signature Hole: The par-3 13th is often cited as a standout, requiring a precise shot across a dramatic dune valley to a well-protected green.1
In a very short window, the course has collected a staggering number of accolades:
World’s Best Golf Course (2024) – World Golf Awards.11
Europe’s Best Golf Course (2023 & 2024) – World Golf Awards.12
#1 Course in Portugal – Ranked by Golf World and Leading Courses.13
#7 in Continental Europe – Golf World Top 100 (2025).
Located in the eastern Algarve near Vila Nova de Cacela, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is widely considered the premier golf destination in Portugal. Set across 1,000 acres of rolling countryside between the Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, it is a world-class resort known for its exclusivity, impeccable service, and Michelin-starred dining.
Monte Rei is home to the North Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design that has been ranked #1 in Portugal since it opened in 2007.
Unique Layout: The course is unusual for its five par-3s and five par-5s, winding through hills and valleys with no two holes running parallel. This gives players a "millionaire’s golf" experience, where you rarely see other groups on the course.
Challenge & Design: It features dramatic elevation changes, water hazards on 11 holes, and meticulously sculpted bunkers. The par-3 13th is a signature hole, playing downhill toward a lake-perched green.
Future Development: A second Jack Nicklaus Signature course, the South Course, is currently under construction, which will make Monte Rei one of the few clubs in the world with two such designs.
The resort offers a high-end "private retreat" atmosphere rather than a traditional hotel vibe.
Accommodations: Guests stay in luxury villas and clubhouse apartments that feature private pools, contemporary Mediterranean architecture, and top-tier amenities like Bosch appliances and Molton Brown toiletries.
Dining: Monte Rei is a culinary destination in its own right. Its flagship restaurant, Vistas, holds a Michelin Star and offers gourmet local seafood. Other options include The Grill for a relaxed clubhouse atmosphere and Veranda for poolside dining.
Wellness & Leisure: Beyond golf, the club provides a full-service spa, a gym with yoga classes, tennis courts, and several heated swimming pools.
The club is about an hour's drive east of Faro Airport, making it more secluded and tranquil than the busy golf hubs of Vilamoura or Albufeira.
