Troia Golf Championship Course
Is a highly acclaimed 18-hole, par 72 links-style course, often ranked among the top courses in Continental Europe. It's renowned for its challenging design and stunning natural setting.
Designer: It was designed by the legendary American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior. Opened in 1980, it's considered one of his masterpieces, with Jones himself selecting the 3rd hole as one of the best he ever designed and including it in his ideal 18-hole course.
Layout and Challenge:
The course stretches along the beach for 6,317 meters (approx. 6,900 yards) and is characterized by its pure links feel, winding through sand dunes and pine groves.
It's known for being challenging, demanding strategic play and accuracy. Fairways can be narrow and are often bordered by sandy waste areas and pine trees, which severely punish errant shots.
Small, often elevated greens are a hallmark of the course, meticulously protected by numerous, strategically placed, deep bunkers. This requires precise approach shots.
Water hazards come into play on several holes, adding to the strategic complexity.
The course has hosted significant professional tournaments, including the Portuguese Open Championship in 1983, where Sam Torrance was the only player to finish under par for the championship, attesting to its difficulty
